The Kootenay Spirit Festival happens annually in mid-September Yoga, meditation, dance and music will fill the weekend schedule, which offers something for everyone who wants to experience the community spirit Nelson provides in a way that is intimate, open and deep. Kootenay Spirit Festival is a great fit for anyone interested in yoga and wellness, but also those who live (or want to live) mindful, healthy, heart-centred lives.

If you love music and love to dance; if you seek inner peace and deeper connection to others and to this gorgeous planet we live in, this is the festival for you.

I had the chance to explore the festival with Trisha Wilson, coordinator for the Kootenay Spirit Festival. The energy behind this festival creates a sense of possibility and openness that encourages both experienced yogis as well as novices to jump in and be a part of this latest addition to the Nelson Kootenay Lake area’s awesome festival line-up.

“It’s about Community,” says Trisha. ” Even more than community I would use the Sanskrit word “kula”, which means community of the heart.  It’s the sense of oneness felt when smiling at others on a crowded dance floor.  It’s the spirit of coming together with intention and celebration.”

It’s that community of the heart that creates the essence of what the Kootenay Spirit Festival is all about. There are yoga classes, concerts, workshops, a yoga jam and the Spirit Fest Marketplace. Literally, something for everyone.

In some ways inspired by Whistler’s Wanderlust, but with a definite homegrown Kootenay twist, the festival will take place in venues throughout Nelson. Trisha notes that “it has its own unique expression – the attuned spirit of the Kootenays born of pure mountain living.” The festival is a great chance to really get to know the heart and soul of  Nelson Kootenay Lake, to kind of feel the pulse of this area.

The time of year couldn’t have been better chosen, either. Mid-September is a time of warm sunny days, of leaves just beginning to change colour and show off their gorgeous hues. The feeling in the air begins to change from summer to fall. It’s a time of quiet contemplation. An excellent time for yoga, meditation, music and dance.

If you are considering attending but are not sure whether a workshop is a good fit for you, the registration team is ready to help you find the perfect choices for your fitness and experience level. The majority of courses are a good fit for all levels, but feel free to ask to make sure that the courses and workshops you are considering are the perfect fit.

The best way to experience the full adventure of this festival is to buy a weekend pass. “This way you have the opportunity to check it all out, to pick and chose the events that appeal most to you.  This will give you a full-on blast of Kootenay spirit!” says Trisha.  Just dive in and explore the classes that sound exciting to you, that move you in some way. If you can’t afford the time and money for the entire weekend, consider a day pass, which still allows you to take in a medley of yoga, dance, meditation and music for either Saturday or Sunday.

The Spirit Behind The Kootenay Spirit Festival

Not surprisingly, but still inspiringly, the spirit behind this festival is energizing and heartwarming. In fact, as Trisha says regarding volunteer opportunities, “We’ve had so many people wanting to help out and be a part of this that our volunteer schedule is now full.” Incredible. But, of course, that is in large part due to the vision set out by the organizing team. Trisha says of their work together that “creating and working with our planning team with such a unified vision has been amazing!” It often seems that when you bring a group of highly committed people together who share a common vision, stuff gets done. That seems to be the case with the spirit festival, for sure.
