Good Natured Sibling Rivalry Between Two Sister (Cities)
Nelson and Sandpoint Idaho are the best kind of sister city: Very close (both geographically and demographically) but with just enough sibling rivalry to keep things interesting. Both cities are small and full of charm, with populations who move there for the lifestyle: athletic, thoughtful, creative and political, both cities are engaged and community minded.
Perfect Fodder for a Fun Foodie Competition
This Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, then, Sandpoint Idaho will host their Oktoberfest International Chef Competition. Nelson’s own Amanda Skidmore from the All Seasons Cafe will represent Nelson, while Reese Warren from Eichardt in Sandpoint will represent his hometown.
Nelson Kootenay Lake Welcomes You to Sandpoint
This weekend is a perfect chance to cross the border and learn a bit more about our neighbours to the south. The weekend will feature local beer from MickDuff’s and Laughing Dog, plus wine from Pend d’Oreille winery.
Food, Fun and Oktoberfest
On October 11, from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm in the Granary Arts District at Fifth and Oak Streets, right downtown (a very quaint and busy downtown, by the way) live entertainment from Nu Jack City will play while you taste the local spirits and eat amazing local food. All the while, of course, there are arts and crafts vendors (Sandpoint has a vibrant arts scene) kids’ activities and the chef competition.
And May the Best Chef Win…
Between 2:00 and 3:00, the competition takes place between Nelson and Sandpoint. Amanda Skidmore and Reese Warren will vie for “Best Chef” in a cook-off which costs only $5.00 ($3.00 if you bring an item for the Bonner Community Food Bank.) and you will be able to witness some good natured sibling rivalry while you sample delicious food, celebrate fall and take part in other food-loving activities as well.
Stay at La Quinta for the weekend, and receive 15% off your accommodation, just because you are from Nelson!
We love our sister (city), but we like a bit of rivalry too. We hope to see you there, cheering Canada and Nelson on for the big win!
Don’t forget Sandpointarians, we welcome you here any time, and will reciprocate the sibling rivalry invitation next spring for a culinary & arts event. Lots of places to stay and things to do here too.
