# 100 – BC Family Day: Celebrate What Family Means to You

Family: What Does it Mean to You?

Grandparents with their grandkids at the park; a new baby with his mom and dad visiting his new aunt; moms with their new little one at the hospital; a riotous group of maybe 30 extended family and friends around a table laden with food?

Family can come in lots of different shapes and sizes: The one thing we hope it always shares is a heavy dose of connection. And the fact that British Columbia has set aside a day for family this February 9th is a great chance to take some time to remember why your family is special to you. Whether your family is young or old, large or small, quiet or loud, we’ve got a way for you to celebrate here in Nelson Kootenay Lake this Family Day (or anytime!).

BC Family Day in Nelson

One of British Columbia’s premiere kids’ shops, Mountain Baby, is located right here on Baker Street. So if your family includes little ones, make sure to head over and grab the essentials. Though they specialize in serious gear for little ones, such as awesome things like snowsuits that’ll keep them warm, snow boots and other gear that has been seriously tested and approved; they also have an incredible selection of the important stuff, too: toys, dress up clothes, books and games. We also have Gericks Cycle & Ski, Village Ski Hut, ROAM and Valhalla Pure right on Baker Street to provide you the gear you need for the adventure of choice.

Whether you decide to spend the day at the Ainworth Hotsprings, skating, fat tire biking or sledding, Nelson has an incredible array of options this February 8th. Check out all that we have for families on the Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism website. If you are looking just for Kootenay kid stuff, we have that information too.

Kaslo Winter in the Forest on BC Family Day

Celebrate Winter with this wonderful local tradition of BC Family Day. Enjoy woodsman sports and fun competitions, XC skiing, plus great entertainment and food. It all happens at the Kaslo Airport, and it’s great fun!

While in Kaslo, families can also take a short walk to the breathtaking Fletcher Falls, or check out the SS Moyie, the world’s oldest intact sternwheeler, lovingly restored to its original glory. The SS Moyie sits right downtown in Kaslo, close to shops and restaurants, so it’s an easy walk afterward to grab a cup of tea and a treat together.

BC Family Day at Whitewater

Whitewater Ski Resort is offering 50% off to BC residents on Family Day! Take advantage of this and have some fun skiing at what many consider to be the most family friendly ski resort in North America. With the excellent food in the lodge (four best-selling cookbooks have been written based on this cuisine) and the chill vibe throughout, it’s the perfect ski resort to be with those you love.

BC Family Day on Kootenay Lake

How fun to take a drive to Balfour and ride the longest free ferry in the world across Kootenay Lake over to Crawford Bay this Family Day? The drive is lovely, and you can stop in at a few artisan’s studios on the way. The entire Kootenay Lake area has more than its share of artisans, but Balfour seems to have a few more than the rest of the region: You’ll see the blue “A” highway signs as you drive along. This means that there is an artisan’s studio within 3 kilometres of the highway.

And while waiting for the ferry, make sure to stop in at the Gill and Gift. This unique little shop sells curios and mementos as well as anything and everything you need for fishing.

Celebrate Your Family With Us
